The best time to visit Goa is from November to February, when the weather is dry, sunny and pleasant. October and March are great shoulder months with fewer crowds, and the monsoon (June to September) is the cheapest and greenest time to visit, though not for beach holidays.
Goa changes completely through the year. The same beach that is packed with shacks in December can be empty and wave-lashed in July. Choosing the right month depends on what you want from your trip: parties, quiet beaches, waterfalls or the best prices. Here is what to expect each month, and how to plan your self-drive trip around it.
Goa Month by Month
| Month | Weather | Crowds | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Dry, sunny, pleasant evenings | High (very busy in the first week) | Beaches, sightseeing, road trips |
| February | Dry, sunny, warm | Medium to high | Beaches, Goa Carnival (Feb or Mar) |
| March | Getting hotter | Medium | Good value, Shigmo festival |
| April | Hot and humid | Low | Budget trips, early mornings and evenings |
| May | Hottest, humid | Very low | Lowest prices, quiet beaches |
| June | Monsoon arrives, heavy rain | Very low | Rain lovers, Sao Joao festival (24 June) |
| July | Peak monsoon | Very low | Greenery, waterfalls, cosy stays |
| August | Monsoon | Low | Greenery, Ganesh Chaturthi (Aug or Sep) |
| September | Rain easing off | Low | Quiet roads, low prices |
| October | Post-monsoon, green and humid | Medium | Waterfalls at their best, season starting |
| November | Pleasant and mostly dry | Medium to high | Great weather before the December rush |
| December | Pleasant, dry | Peak (Christmas and New Year) | Parties, festive atmosphere |
Peak Season: November to February
This is Goa at its best: clear skies, calm seas and comfortable temperatures. Beach shacks are open, water sports run every day, and the nightlife is in full swing. It is ideal for beach-hopping and long drives along the coast.
The trade-off is crowds and prices, especially from Christmas to New Year. Roads around Baga, Calangute and Anjuna get very busy in the evenings, so plan your drives early in the day and use paid parking where you can.
Shoulder Months: October and March
October is when Goa wakes up after the rains. The countryside is still lush, waterfalls such as Dudhsagar are at their most powerful, and shacks start reopening. March is warmer but quieter than peak season, with good hotel deals and the colourful Shigmo festival.
Summer: April and May
April and May are hot and humid, and the middle of the day is best spent indoors or in the water. In return you get the lowest crowds before the monsoon and good prices. Plan beach visits and drives for early mornings and evenings, and pick a car with strong air conditioning.

View Our CarsMonsoon: June to September
The monsoon turns Goa a brilliant green. Rivers swell, waterfalls appear in the hills, and the roads to the Western Ghats are at their most beautiful. Hotel prices drop sharply and the beaches are almost empty.
It is not a beach holiday, though. The sea is rough and unsafe for swimming, most water sports are suspended, and many beach shacks close for the season. The Dudhsagar jeep safari is also closed during heavy monsoon, usually from June to September.
Driving in Goa in Each Season
- Peak season: expect traffic near the popular North Goa beaches in the evenings. A compact car such as the Maruti Suzuki Swift is easier to park.
- Monsoon: drive slowly, keep your headlights on in heavy rain, and avoid waterlogged roads. An SUV with good ground clearance, such as the Hyundai Creta, handles potholes and wet roads better.
- Convertibles: a Mahindra Thar or Mini Cooper Convertible is perfect from November to March. In the monsoon, plan to keep the roof up.
- Families: in any season, a 7-seater such as the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga or Toyota Innova Crysta keeps everyone together.
Best Time for Different Trips
- Beaches and water sports: November to March.
- Parties and nightlife: December, especially Christmas to New Year.
- Honeymoons and couples: November to February, or October for a quieter, greener Goa.
- Waterfalls and greenery: July to October.
- Budget trips: June to September, then April and May.
